In one mere month, my “baby” will turn a year old. How can that be?? But as I watch Hazel walk and play and interact, I realize that she’s growing up fast and becoming a big girl right before my eyes.
She’s been walking for a solid month now, and she’s getting very proficient. She still stumbles and falls on her bum a lot, but she has crossed the line where she will walk by default instead of crawl. It’s cute to watch her toddle around, and it’s pretty mind blowing to see both of my kids standing up beside each other. Again, no babies anymore in the Taylor house.
My mom was here visiting us for four weeks through October. The kids loved having Grandma around, and she loved taking care of and playing with them. Hazel got to spend a few special days at home with Grandma, and we all did some fun activities together during the month. We were very sad when she had to leave, but we look forward to seeing her again at Christmas.
Hazel’s favorite activities this month include opening and closing doors (and yes, sometimes closing herself into a room), playing on the lowest pantry shelf (we lost one of her shoes for a good 12 hours until I thought to look there, and sure enough…), driving her push toy in circles around the house (this requires constant outside assistance since she can’t turn it to steer yet), pulling off her socks and shoes, dunking her hands in Murphy’s water, and eating dog food. Three adults in the house, and she still managed to eat dog food three times in two days. Sigh.
Hazel appears to be the one who introduced a stomach bug to the Taylor household last month. Her tummy clearly hurt one Friday evening, but by the next day she was fine. The rest of us took a week and a half to recover. At least she’s resilient.
Hazel’s first Halloween was fun, but not super eventful. She was Rosie the Riveter, complemented by Hudson as a WWII flying ace. She really objected to her red polka dotted headband and pulled it off at every opportunity. Daycare had a parade/trunk or treat, though she really wasn’t old enough to participate in much of the partying. She was also so tired that she ended up going to bed early, leaving Hudson to trick-or-treat alone. Again, she’s pretty young to get much out of Halloween yet, but judging by how much fun Hudson had this year, she should really enjoy it next time.
Between teething and stomach bugs and whatever else we can blame it on, Hazel still wakes up one or two times per night. She can still sleep through once in a while and even fall back asleep after fussing for a minute, so I just have to assume that when she wakes up and can’t go back to sleep, she really does want mommy or daddy for a minute. That makes it not so bad to get up with her, but I won’t mind when we aren’t doing this anymore. Someday…right?
Hazel, you’re getting so big and will soon be a year old. You’re generally a happy girl and very motivated. Like Rosie the Riveter, yes, you can do just about anything you set your mind to!
