Last week, for our summer vacation we took the kids to the Outer Banks for a week. Seven days in one beach house with five adults and four kids four and under is a little bit of insanity, but we survived and had a good time while we were at it.

I know, I complain about winter every year, but let’s be honest: it has few redeeming qualities. I worried that being stuck in the house with a newborn would be depressing this winter; thankfully, I’ve actually been quite active and upbeat. However, the dreary days and long nights always have me dreaming of short sleeves and sunny skies. And despite being a brown thumb, somewhere around January I always imagine all the green things I would like to try my hand at keeping alive the next season. And if I get an early start on the vegetation, even better. I can brown-thumb my nose at winter’s last dregs and scoff in defiance at the cold.

The big chill

It’s suddenly September, and right on queue we are getting a much needed reprieve from an oppressively hot and humid stretch in August. But leave it to the Taylors to have gotten a brand new refrigerator on one of the the most oppressively hot day of the entire summer.

Happy eleven months, Hudson! This last month has been an eventful one, though I probably say that about every month. Can you believe you’ll be a year old in just a few weeks?

It’s been a while since I’ve touched base with the blog. We’ve had a few things going on recently, but I’ve been a bit slow to update, so here’s a quick rundown of our recent adventures.

Wednesday was my birthday, one of my favorite days of the year. That birthday feeling and how I celebrate has changed a bit over the years, but I still always look forward to the special day. Fall is definitely here in Washington, D.C. ┬áThe leaves aren’t quite turning just yet, but we’ve had cooler weather and that telltale nip in the air. Other than regretting the inevitable onset of winter, I love fall and the upcoming holiday season. This year it will be much different with a little one, even more special as he gets to experience things for the first time.

I hope everyone had a great Independence Day weekend. I ended up taking off on Thursday, giving Bart and me a long, 4-day weekend. While we didn’t do anything super exciting or earth-shattering, it turned out to be a really great opportunity to hang out, relax a bit, and also be productive in one of our last weeks before the baby comes.

Bart and I were stuck inside for a couple of days due to snow. While we managed to escape yesterday before going too stir crazy, I did find myself getting rather worn down with the constant barrage of winter. However, a snow day seemed like the perfect time to whip up one of my favorite breakfast recipes, oatmeal yogurt pancakes, which I’ve decided to share with you today.

Four-day weekend

Today was our first (and hopefully only) snow day of the winter. A big front came through last night dumping about five inches of snow at our house and closing the government for the day. Since yesterday was Presidents’ Day, that meant I had an impromptu four-day weekend. I might have enjoyed it more if it hadn’t been so cold, but hey, I’ll take it.
