As I stated here on the blog a year ago, I really do not care for April Fools Day. I appreciate a clever prank or some witty playfulness now and again, but I feel that some jokes go a little far on this day. Rather than focusing on a negative, however, I’ve decided to take today to begin a new monthly challenge for April, one that I believe is wise and not at all foolish.

Despite nearly three solid days of rain (one afternoon of which, as much as it galls me to recount, was actually snow), Bart and I were amazingly productive this weekend. Our goal for the weekend was to construct the baseboard heater cover for the spare bedroom–the last project remaining before touching up paint and calling it D-O-N-E. But we did pretty much everything but that.

Hey, whatever works. If putting one single task on our to-do list results in knocking off fifteen that have also been languishing there, then I guess it was a worthy trade.

So, this morning I woke up and decided that we needed a new water heater.

Just kidding. That’s never how the story starts.

There is only one being in Washington, D.C. who was actually excited about the snow today.

I guess it’s a lot more novel when it’s the only time you’ve actually be able to dash through it all winter.

This week, I’m celebrating the return of two people, one about whom I’m very excited, and the other whom I really want to kick to the curb and possibly give a bloody nose.

At times along the way it seemed like an eternity, but today finally marks eight weeks since Murphy’s disc episode. We’ve completed the full conservative crate rest treatment; like a cast for a broken bone, this prolonged restriction of movement should have allowed his spine to solidly heal, and he can be liberated to enjoy normal life again.

Today marks five months since we’ve been in our house. I didn’t expect it to be winter for the entire first five months here, but here I am stuck at home on yet another snow day. Seriously? I thought I moved from Colorado, but maybe I’m mistaken.

The last month has brought some more visible changes to the house, which is a nice change from the unexciting grunt work that you can’t really see. I mentioned our two new furniture items, a coat wardrobe and a kitchen storage island, which have made a big impact in form and function. I’ve also made a few decor purchases. Up until now, I’ve felt like I should hold off on decorating since we expect to be painting and fixing drywall throughout the house. But given how long our first project has taken to complete, I decided it might be awhile until we got to other areas of the house, and I figured I should enjoy some cheerful trappings in the meantime.

Happy Pi Day, dear readers! It’s 3-14, the day we non-Europeans celebrate everyone’s favorite irrational number, pi. Thanks to my new meal-planning regime, I was actually able to prepare for the day and have all the ingredients on hand for some special commemorative dishes.

One of the most frustrating things about moving is finding new health care providers. Praise God that we’re young and pretty healthy, so it’s not that we need a barrage of doctors treating multiple conditions. But it is overwhelming to randomly pick a primary care provider out of seemingly thousands of options around a new town. We don’t usually have illnesses requiring a visit to a general practitioner, but we are always diligent to get regular biannual cleanings and checkups at the dentist, and finding a new dentist is just as intimidating as locating a doctor. I guess that’s why we put it off when we moved to DC…at least until now.
