Before we left for Curacao, I was asked to attend a meeting in California for work this week. I usually enjoy the occasional work trip, mostly because I’m not asked to do it often enough to become onerous. Of course, I didn’t know we’d be tending a convalescing dog after our vacation, so I agreed, even with the quick turn-around. I was a little sad to have to leave Murph, but honestly he’s doing just fine and Bart has been doing a wonderful job of caring for him this week. So I bid my boys good-bye for a couple of days and jaunted off to the west coast.

I don’t normally travel so much, but ever since fall, I feel like I’ve been on the go every time I turn around. We traveled to Raleigh for Thanksgiving; I had a conference in Seattle the next week; then we spent 10 days in Arkansas for Christmas; we just returned from a week-long international vacation in the Caribbean; now I’m flying again to the West Coast for work related stuff. I know there are people who travel way more than I do, but I’m beginning to feel like a real jet-setter over here. While I’m by no means the most expert traveler, I have had enough adventures in the last few years to experiment with quite a variety of travel related gear. I have come across some real winners that have made traveling just a little bit easier, and I thought I could pass along some of my top picks for traveling smart.

Pup-date: every day a Saturday

We have one week of Murphy’s back issue behind us now. The majority of that time, we were still gone and he was stuck at the vet hospital until we could come get him. He’s been home for three full days now, and I wanted to update you on the situation so far and what the plan is.

Clearly, I’ve been a little bit distracted since we got home from our trip. Murphy is doing well, and we’re still adjusting to our routine for the next weeks. I finally got some time to sort through our photos from Curaçao tonight and thought I’d finally share a few highlights from our week in the Caribbean.

As I write this, I am on a plane over the Caribbean, returning from a warm, sunny week on the beach with family. I should be telling you about the island of Curaçao, about how I finally learned to snorkel, about the beautiful turquoise water, about how I appreciate missing the latest round of bitterly cold weather in the states, and soon I will. But this, unfortunately, is not what I must share with you today.

On Wednesday evening, after a day out exploring the island, I casually grabbed my phone to check the day’s email with the wifi provided in the apartment we were renting. I was surprised to see that I had missed multiple calls and had a voicemail. I couldn’t return the calls or listen to the message because I didn’t have international calling on my phone; I was only using the wifi connection. But when I checked my email, I quickly discerned who had been calling.

I hope you’re sitting down, because you’ll be floored to realize it’s been three months since we bought our house. It has spanned the three busiest months of the entire year, so we’ve been quite busy with moving and holidays and travel, but we’ve started to take on some interesting projects and make some progress around the house.

We had some friends over for dinner a couple of weeks ago, and when deciding what to make for them, I was inspired by an awesome deep dish lasagna pan that I got from Bart’s grandmother for Christmas (thank you, Mema!). And why make just one lasagna when you can make two: since our friends just had a baby, I thought it would be nice to make one for them…if they weren’t afraid to eat my cooking again. Who wants to think about making dinner when there’s a new baby to cuddle? So since I was whipping them up, I thought I’d take a second to share my method for lasagna and show of my nifty new bakeware.

Last Sunday, Bart and I braved crummy weather and weekend crowds and headed to the mall. It was really just an excuse to get out of the house, as it’s easy to hibernate when it’s cold and damp in the dead of winter. While we were there, I went in a store that had some cute decor featuring silhouettes of animals on curtains and in picture frames. I even shared a dressing room with a framed silhouette of a dachshund, which I found absolutely adorable. It got me inspired with the possibility of making some art of my own.
