Last week, for our summer vacation we took the kids to the Outer Banks for a week. Seven days in one beach house with five adults and four kids four and under is a little bit of insanity, but we survived and had a good time while we were at it.

The Arkansas Traveler

I stewed on the idea of taking Hazel to Arkansas for a long time; in fact, the thought probably crossed my mind even before she was born. Not everyone in the family is able to jaunt over to Washington DC to pay a visit to our newest family member, so it made sense to bring her to them. However, it’s a little daunting to consider taking a newborn a thousand miles on a plane all by oneself. But the more I stewed on it, the more I decided I might just be able to swing it. Eventually, circumstances finally pushed me over the edge to give it a try last week.

Last week, I was able to attend one of our major conferences of the year. This was the first time I have traveled for work since before Hudson was born and, other than my short hospital stay in January, the first time I have really been away from him at all. And apparently there were no baby steps getting back into it; I jumped right in by spending an entire week in the United Kingdom without Bart and Hudson. Thankfully, everything went incredibly well on both sides of the pond.
The accidental basement makeover

While we were busy renovating the three bedrooms upstairs during the last year and a half, something unforeseen and somewhat accidental happened to our basement. Without really even trying, it somehow got an update of its own, transforming from a dark, stark hole where Bart had his office to an actually inviting spot for living and working. It’s almost a little cruel when I think about all the effort it took to get the upstairs where we wanted it, but maybe it’s a much needed lesson about home improvement and expectations.

At 28 weeks, I am officially in my third trimester. We have less than three months left until our little guy is due, and I’m equal parts ready for it to be here and content to have a little time left. The second trimester was crammed full of travel, visitors, projects, and general churn which only just wrapped up over Memorial Day weekend. It was great to be busy when I was feeling well, but now our schedule for the summer is looking more relaxed, and I am looking forward to coasting a bit to the finish line.

Bart and I were stuck inside for a couple of days due to snow. While we managed to escape yesterday before going too stir crazy, I did find myself getting rather worn down with the constant barrage of winter. However, a snow day seemed like the perfect time to whip up one of my favorite breakfast recipes, oatmeal yogurt pancakes, which I’ve decided to share with you today.
