Hazel is four months old today! We’ve had a nice, long stretch together since she was born, but the time has finally come for me to return to work next week. It will be good to get back to “real life,” but I will miss the time we’ve enjoyed together.

I stewed on the idea of taking Hazel to Arkansas for a long time; in fact, the thought probably crossed my mind even before she was born. Not everyone in the family is able to jaunt over to Washington DC to pay a visit to our newest family member, so it made sense to bring her to them. However, it’s a little daunting to consider taking a newborn a thousand miles on a plane all by oneself. But the more I stewed on it, the more I decided I might just be able to swing it. Eventually, circumstances finally pushed me over the edge to give it a try last week.

Hazel is two months old! She’s growing so fast, which is what babies do best, I’ve been told. Month two has been much calmer than the first one, and we are enjoying our time together on maternity leave.

Hazel is one month old! The first month went by quite quickly because it was chock full of holidays and visitors and travel, but now that things are settling into a more normal routine, it’s time to look back on our first few weeks as a family of four.

In case you didn’t notice, 2016 was just about the worst year ever. In addition to social and political drama such as a glut of celebrity deaths and the presidential election, many people I know, including our family, had a pretty crummy year personally. That doesn’t mean 2016 was a total failure, but I’m not sad to see it go.
