Previously, I talked about our accidental basement makeover that kind of just happened while we were working on the other two bedroom renovations upstairs. Today, after alluding to it for months, I wanted to officially share the final result of those two rooms with you, bringing our update of the three upstairs bedrooms to a close. While there are still other projects we’d like to do upstairs, it’s nice to say we’ve at least wrapped up this segment. Now for the first time since we moved in two years ago, I have all bedrooms clean and functional!

Bart and I began work on Room #2 after Christmas, and progress has been slow but steady. We thought it would move faster, but I was too exhausted in the first trimester to do much, and Bart couldn’t work on much during the evenings when I was going to bed at 7 pm for weeks on end. But finally I felt better and the weather improved, so the update got rolling again. I am relieved to say that this room is finally done as of last weekend!

With the deepest part of winter behind us, February brings at least a glimmer of hope for the eventuality of spring. We aren’t quite out of the cold just yet, but this last weekend was a welcome respite, with temperatures up to 60 degrees and more on Sunday. We usually allow ourselves a bit of hibernation during January, purposefully taking a break, resting, and recharging for the upcoming months. This year was no different, as the relaxed pace of blog posts have probably indicated. The pace has picked up a bit this month, though, so we’re slowly ramping back up and getting back into the mood for tackling some new projects, because we’ve got quite a few on the docket.

Well, we have the beginnings of a big mess. Hopefully that also translates into the beginning of an awesome, fresh, updated Spare Oom #2.

When my parents come to town, they always want to help us with stuff around the house. When they were in town a few weeks ago, they volunteered to tackle some projects with us if we wanted, so we consulted our (impossibly long) to-do list and picked two things that seemed perfectly timed for fall.

Believe it or not, this weekend marks one full year that we’ve been in our new house. I guess that after a year, you can’t really call a 52-year-old house new, but it still feels like yesterday since we had boxes piled high everywhere. We’ve been pretty busy this year, ripping things out, putting new things in, and making our own personal mark on our space. We’ve also accomplished a lot out of the house, from regional travel to making friends, from getting involved at church to traveling out of the country a few times. Let’s take a look back at what all our first year as homeowners in the DC area has brought us.
Home sweet home

Home sweet home

Not that Washington, DC is “Home” yet, but it’s our home for now. We’ve learned to appreciate the opportunities here in DC and how to deal with the crummy parts, like traffic and overcrowding. Being settled in our own house and finally having friends and being involved in a church has helped us reorient and figure out what our new chapter of life looks like. It’s ever changing still, but that keeps life interesting, right? It will be interesting to reflect on the coming year next October to see what year two in our house and year three of Washington, DC, look like.

Back in September, we began an update of a pantry/storage closet below the stairs in our basement. We decided to do everything ourselves, from installing new drywall to putting down new flooring. It took a little longer than we expected, but we recently put the finishing touches on the project.
