I know, I complain about winter every year, but let’s be honest: it has few redeeming qualities. I worried that being stuck in the house with a newborn would be depressing this winter; thankfully, I’ve actually been quite active and upbeat. However, the dreary days and long nights always have me dreaming of short sleeves and sunny skies. And despite being a brown thumb, somewhere around January I always imagine all the green things I would like to try my hand at keeping alive the next season. And if I get an early start on the vegetation, even better. I can brown-thumb my nose at winter’s last dregs and scoff in defiance at the cold.

Bravo-cado 

When we last met our brave little avocado plant, it was growing up a storm in the sunshine on our back deck. When fall set in, we brought it inside for the winter, where it got lots of afternoon sun in our kitchen window. Recently, the Little Pit That Could is doing some very bizarre and interesting things as the saga of growing-an-avocado-plant-from-a-pit continues.

Well, the good news is that my last basil plant didn’t technically die like the first one. The bad news is that it just never grew once I brought it home and repotted it. I put it in a nice, sunny window and watered it carefully, but I didn’t see any new growth whatsoever after about a month. In my ever-continuing quest to be successful at growing a kitchen herb garden, I decided to try a new approach with a third plant and see if I could finally achieve some basil success.

I’m on yet another snow day today. Have I mentioned that I’m fed up with winter already?

Recently I reported on my holiday tradition of growing bulbs in the house and subduing at least part of the gloominess of winter with some fresh blooms. Sadly, the last of my paperwhites have faded now; meanwhile, the weather is still atrocious and not even hinting of letting up. However, yet another snowstorm can’t bury the desire to see something green thriving around our house, and our winter defiance planting has been heating up in anticipation of spring.
