Murphy is nine years old! Can you believe it? Given that most dachshunds live well into their teens, he could still have a lot of life ahead of him, but he’s certainly getting on up there (just like the rest of us, I suppose).

Last weekend, we noticed that Murphy was acting just a little off. He whimpered a couple of times and looked like he didn’t feel well. I panicked a little bit (okay, a lot), fearing that he was about to experience another slipped disc; we crated him immediately to keep him from moving around too much and proceeded to wait and see what happened.

My daily perusal of Timehop reminded me that today is one year since we let Murphy out of crate rest after his IVDD episode. What a great day that was! As I explained in my blog post from that day, the event itself wasn’t all that climactic; he had already been healing well in previous weeks, and we had even let him out of his crate on supervised prowls around the living room. However, liberation day represented a very good outcome, one for which we are very thankful.

So, how is Murph doing one year after his paralysis? Well, he’s been tearing through the yard after squirrels this spring, running the fence line barking at our neighbor dog Snickers the ‘Doodle, and bounding through the snow. He even flat-out jumped on the couch last weekend, which is a gigantic no-no. He used to jump on the couch all the time despite our best efforts to the contrary, but his weakened back leg has made it a bit harder for him, and he rarely tries unless he is absolutely desperate for attention. We were pretty shocked when he managed it, but our stern reprimands were accompanied by silent appreciation of his feat, something that he probably couldn’t have managed months ago.

His back right leg is still weak, though it has strengthened over the year to allow him to jump more, as evidenced by the couch. He sometimes has difficulty getting up the two steps from the yard onto the deck, especially if it’s icy or piled up with snow, but that would be challenging enough for a little dog with short legs anyway. It’s sad and hilarious at the same time to see his tracks in the snow–there are three little paw prints and one longer swipe where that bum leg drags just a little bit. But despite these few setbacks, he’s enjoying a pretty normal doggy life.

Happy Liberation Day, Murph!

It is absolutely pouring this morning. My drive into work was even more stressful than those I had to do in ice and snow this winter; I had my windshield wipers on full-blast the entire way, and that wasn’t overkill. Water was pouring off overpasses, and the curbs in town were rushing rivers of water. Fortunately, I made it to work safely, if a little soggy. I don’t have a lot of years of local experience to compare this one to, but it seems that this spring is extraordinarily wet. This isn’t the first crazy downpour I’ve seen since March, and I’m willing to bet it won’t be the last.

Murphy, you annoy the snot out of us sometimes: you puke on my new rug, you piddle in the floor every time someone comes over and pets you and you’re so excited, you bark like crazy in the yard, we can’t take you out on the leash because you try to protect us from every perceived threat and sound like you’re going to tear them up, and you are an epic whiner. But you’re a sweet companion, you love everybody who comes to visit, you get so excited over the little things like dinner time and treats, you (sort of) chase the squirrels away from the bird feeder, you want to cuddle on our laps, you are sooo happy to see us when we come home, you’re very intelligent (though stubborn), you run circles around the house like a maniac when you’re feeling ornery and playful, you like to tuck yourself into bed under your blanket dachshund-style, and you’re a good sport when we tease you. Given where we were five months ago, we’re glad that you’re still around, and we don’t take for granted that you can stand and wag while posing for a birthday pic this morning.

There is only one being in Washington, D.C. who was actually excited about the snow today.

I guess it’s a lot more novel when it’s the only time you’ve actually be able to dash through it all winter.

At times along the way it seemed like an eternity, but today finally marks eight weeks since Murphy’s disc episode. We’ve completed the full conservative crate rest treatment; like a cast for a broken bone, this prolonged restriction of movement should have allowed his spine to solidly heal, and he can be liberated to enjoy normal life again.
