Hazel Ruth turns one today! What a year it has been, for better or worse. That has really made time fly by, but it’s been really wonderful to watch Hazel develop and become a big girl. She’s been a shining spot in the midst of difficult times.

Hudson’s birthday coincided with the epic Solar Eclipse 2017, a once-in-a-lifetime event that a two-year-old could never appreciate. In fact, I’m pretty sure he slept right through it (since the peak happened pretty close to nap time). Between eclipse viewing and birthday partying, it was a crazy, hectic, but very fun day that I’ll always remember.

October unquestionably kicks off a season of celebrations, especially in my family where we have not only the holidays but six straight months of birthdays (seriously, Hudson is the only one in my immediate family outside of the range). The last week was particularly eventful with my birthday and Halloween leading off this holiday season.

Murphy is nine years old! Can you believe it? Given that most dachshunds live well into their teens, he could still have a lot of life ahead of him, but he’s certainly getting on up there (just like the rest of us, I suppose).

Wednesday was my birthday, one of my favorite days of the year. That birthday feeling and how I celebrate has changed a bit over the years, but I still always look forward to the special day. This year, obviously, is my first one to celebrate with Hudson. He didn’t sing to me or get me a card or anything, but he, Bart, and I had some fun adventures that made it a lovely, extended birthday celebration.

Last weekend, we noticed that Murphy was acting just a little off. He whimpered a couple of times and looked like he didn’t feel well. I panicked a little bit (okay, a lot), fearing that he was about to experience another slipped disc; we crated him immediately to keep him from moving around too much and proceeded to wait and see what happened.
